Ancient Medicine

Meets Modern Research

There is a misconception that “alternative medicine” is untested, uninvestigated, and rooted in superstition rather than science. But time and time again, studies have shown that natural entheogens and the rituals surrounding them have real impacts and effects.

The healing potential of entheogens in addressing trauma and PTSD is dissected into three critical components, each underpinned by a blend of ancient wisdom and modern scientific research:

There is a misconception that “alternative medicine” is untested, uninvestigated, and rooted in superstition rather than science. But time and time again, studies have shown that natural entheogens and the rituals surrounding them have real impacts and effects.

The healing potential of entheogens in addressing trauma and PTSD is dissected into three critical components, each underpinned

by a blend of ancient wisdom and modern scientific research:

Psychological Impact

The Warrior Tribe program acknowledges the profound neuro-psychotherapeutic effects of entheogens. These natural substances are more than just traditional remedies; they are potent agents for altering emotional and cognitive responses to trauma. Through their unique interaction with the brain, entheogens help individuals reshape their traumatic narratives, enable a recalibration of emotional responses, and foster improved mental health.

This component underscores the shift from mere symptom management to addressing the root causes of trauma, leading to more sustainable emotional well-being.

Cognitive Shifts

The program also highlights the crucial role of entheogens in inducing neurological restructuring. By enhancing neuroplasticity, these substances open pathways for the brain to form new, healthier neural connections. This process is instrumental in transforming entrenched thought patterns associated with trauma, thereby facilitating a cognitive liberation from the vicious cycles of trauma-induced thoughts and behaviors.

It’s a testament to the potential of entheogens to not only heal but also empower the mind, offering a new lens through which traumatic experiences are perceived and processed.

Healing Framework

Finally, the Warrior Tribe Program emphasizes a comprehensive healing framework, integrating psycho-spiritual support with therapeutic guidance. This holistic approach recognizes the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit in the healing journey. Continuous integration ensures that the insights gained during the entheogenic experiences are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the individual’s daily life.

This ongoing support is pivotal in translating profound entheogenic experiences into tangible, long-lasting changes in life post-therapy.

Pioneering Research

in Psychedelic Therapy

Entheogen medicines, rooted in ancient healing traditions and now increasingly validated by modern science, have emerged as a powerful catalyst in healing trauma. These natural substances, when used responsibly and under professional guidance, have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in not only alleviating symptoms of trauma but also in facilitating profound, transformative experiences.

Explore these groundbreaking studies on Psilocybin, DMT, and Ayahuasca’s efficacy in treating depression, anxiety, and cognitive function.

Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms)

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound produced by more than 200 species of fungi, commonly known as “magic mushrooms.” It’s best known for its psychedelic effects, which can include visual and auditory hallucinations, an altered perception of time and space, and profound changes in mood and feeling.

Effects of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy on
Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial

A 2020 study from the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research reaffirmed the antidepressant effects of psilocybin on people experiencing major depressive disorder (MDD). After two sessions of psilocybin-assisted therapy, participants saw a significant decrease in the severity of their depression over the short- and medium-term, including rapid relief just one day after their first treatment.

Psilocybin produces substantial and sustained decreases in depression and anxiety in patients with life-threatening cancer: A randomized double-blind trial

Published in 2016, this randomized study followed the long-term effects of high-dose psilocybin treatment on 51 cancer patients with anxiety and depression. The results were astounding; more than 80% of participants reported improved well-being and life satisfaction, even six months after their last treatment, and they attributed this improvement to their entheogenic experiences.

Psilocybin microdosers demonstrate greater observed improvements in mood and mental health at one month relative to non-microdosing controls

This study from 2022 explored the impact of month-long, low-dose psilocybin usage (microdosing) on nearly 1,000 participants. Despite differences in age, gender, and the presence of mental health concerns, most microdosers saw moderate improvements in mood, mental well-being, and psychomotor performance throughout the month.

Single-dose psilocybin-assisted therapy in major depressive disorder: a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomised clinical trial

In this double-blind, randomized clinical trial from 2022, 52 participants with MDD were given either a moderate dose of psilocybin or a placebo under psychologist supervision. Two weeks after their entheogenic therapy session, the psilocybin group demonstrated a major decrease in depressive symptoms and reported no adverse effects. More significantly, 54% of participants met the criteria for remission from depression.

DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine)

DMT, or N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, is a powerful psychedelic compound found in various plants and also produced naturally in small amounts in the human body. It’s particularly well-known for its presence in the South American plant brew, ayahuasca, used traditionally in shamanic rituals for spiritual and healing purposes.

Human brain effects of DMT assessed via EEG-fMRI

Using an electroencephalography-functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) to monitor the effects of DMT, this 2023 study found that the entheogen promoted global hyperconnectivity, collapsed hierarchical organization, and reduced intranetwork integrity in the brain. In other words, the immersive, altered-consciousness experience of DMT can profoundly impact the way our minds work, specifically in the regions of the brain associated with cognitive functions.

Ayahuasca (South American Psychoactive)

Ayahuasca is a traditional South American psychoactive brew used primarily for spiritual and medicinal purposes by indigenous tribes in the Amazon region. It’s known for its powerful hallucinogenic properties and has gained international attention for its potential therapeutic benefits, particularly in the realm of mental health.

Rapid antidepressant effects of the psychedelic ayahuasca in treatment-resistant depression: a randomized placebo-controlled trial

This first-of-its-kind controlled trial from 2019 examined the positive effects of the DMT-rich ayahuasca—an entheogenic substance traditionally used in South American shamanic ceremonies—on 29 patients with severe depression. During several check-ins the week after treatment, the participants who received the ayahuasca scored much lower on the depression rating scale than those who received the placebo.
